Taijiquan (TCC) pronounced
'Tie Chee choo-waun' and more simply referred to as 'tai chi', is an Internal
Martial Art of Chinese origin. It is considered Internal because
continued studies cultivate increased internal energy. This non-physical
development occurs through the understanding and application of TCC principles.
With proper instruction, and a disciplined approach to studies, a merging of
correct body mechanics with learned energetic skills can result in the
manifestation of great internal power.
TCC, although very effective
as a combat art for advanced level practitioners, is also well known as a
powerful form of Qiqong (chee goong). The purpose of Qigong practice is to
create an atmosphere within the body that is favorable to self-healing so that
the practitioner can achieve and maintain emotional and spiritual well being in
addition to increasing physical capabilities. Many health benefits can be
reaped by just about anyone who studies TCC, regardless of their martial
intent. With TCC, enhanced internal development is the primary goal rather than
learning martial techniques and distinguished physical skills. However, TCC is
the most dynamic form of Qigong practiced on the planet in this regard because
it maintains a physical link to the martial arts.
The common denominator
between TCC and the 'External' arts is a focus on the body and physical
development. TCC does not stop there though and through its slow and long
practice routines practitioners develop acute sensitivities to subtle energy
changes within the body as well as an experiential understanding of how the
energetic principles relate to physical form.
TCC is possibly the oldest
and most authentic form of 'somatic' movement practice. This term describes the
field of study of human beings as experienced from the inside. From this
perspective, the TCC 'mover' develops an enhanced understanding of what it
means to be fully present in the human body through movement. Somatic practices
support holistic wellness because they develop one's mental, emotional, and
spiritual experience of life through the basis of physical movement and
conditioning. The TCC mover gains greater awareness of these sensations over
time as a result of slowly moving through space in specific repetitive
patterns.
In learning to TCC, we become
more aware of how our bodies relate to other natural changes and we develop an
intuitive understanding of how physical principles affect out everyday
lives. |
